The team was founded in 1983 as the Recruit Seagulls, a corporate team under Recruit Co., Ltd. They were promoted from X2 to X1 in 1989, won their first division title in 1995, and their first league and national title in 1996. A second league and national title followed in 1998. After an economic downturn, the team transitioned from a corporate team to a club team in 1999. In 2002, Recruit withdrew sponsorship, and the team became a self-supporting club team under the name 'Seagulls'. In 2003, Obic Co., Ltd. became the new sponsor, and the team name changed to Obic Seagulls. They won their third league and national title in 2005.
